Enjoying Medina Lake Preserve

The weather has been great the past few days, sunshine and in the mid-70’s isn’t bad for January! We’ve been relaxing and enjoying walks around the park. It’s a great walking park, fairly flat and a nice long loop to follow...and it's fun to see all the deer.

We plan to go back into San Antonio before we leave Medina Lake so we can spend some time wandering the Riverwalk. We did see a little of it after our tour and it is really pretty. Lots of shops and restaurants…should be fun!

Segway in San Antonio

What a fun day!! We took a 2-hour tour of San Antonio on Segways. If you aren’t familiar with what a Segway is, it’s a 2 wheel vehicle that self-balances and you move forward and back by shifting your weight. (here is a link). Every time Dave sees someone zipping around on a Segway (mostly on TV) he says he wants to ride on one, so when I saw this tour on the internet I figured we ought to give it a go. I highly recommend it. Not only are the Segways easy to handle but it’s a great way to tour around a city. Our guide was a very nice guy, he even gave us a little extra time to just zip around an empty parking lot because we were all having such fun. The tour took us through a lot of the historical areas of downtown San Antonio ending at the Alamo. I think we will be looking for Segway tours at other cities we visit…they are a blast!

Medina Lake

It’s been 4 days since we arrived at Thousand Trails Medina Lake in Lakehills, TX. There has been a couple days of rain but we have been able to get out for walks everyday but one. This is a large and very pretty park with an amazing amount of deer. The deer don’t walk right up to you but are obviously used to humans. They aren’t real excited about Cheyenne but she sure likes watching them!

One interesting thing that has been happening since we have been here…the trailer and pickup are under attack by a Cardinal! It evidently sees it’s reflection in the windows and keeps flying into them trying to attack the “other” male Cardinal it sees. Doesn’t seem to hurt it at all. We thought it would eventually quit but it hasn’t so today Dave put up our outdoor window covers. It still attacks the mirrors on the pickup but at least we don’t have to listen to it thump into the trailer now!

It was fun to see new territory on our way to Texas. Where we are staying is different than I had pictured, a lot more trees. Looking forward to going in to San Antonio and seeing a little more of Texas!

In Texas

Yesterday we stopped at Las Cruses, NM for the night. We stayed at the KOA there, nice park with an amazing view of the nearby mountains. Today our destination was Fort Stockton, TX which is where we are for the night. We’re at the Ft Stockton RV Park, another nice park that we would have no problem staying at again.

Tomorrow it’s off to the Thousand Trails park in Lakehills, TX. According to the weather forecasts Lakehills is going to have nasty rain with possible thunderstorm starting tomorrow night through Saturday! Hopefully they are wrong, but even if they are correct it’s only supposed to last a couple days and then sunshine. :o)

Off to Texas

We left Thousand Trails Verde Valley early Sunday morning (the 10th) to begin our trip to Texas. Our first stop is at Willcox, AZ at the Magic Circle RV Park. It’s a plain RV park but very clean, fairly level sites, clean restrooms, just off the freeway, and good sized dog run. All in all a perfectly nice place to stay for a night or two.

Today we drove into Tombstone, AZ. It’s a typical tourist place now but still fun to see. We stopped at Boothill Cemetery. Probably most of the people there died due to accidents or illness, however quite a number of people in that cemetery were hung or shot…one guy, Tom Waters, was shot in 1880 because of the color of his shirt! Another, James Hickey was shot in the left temple by William Clayborne for his over-insistence that they drink together. Kind of an interesting insight to how people lived, and died, then.

Almost 2010!

We made our way back to Thousand Trails Verde Valley shortly after Christmas. Our route took us over Hoover Dam which was fun. As many times as we have been to Vegas that was the first time I've seen Hoover Dam! Since we were towing a trailer we had to stop and have it inspected before crossing, it is a safety inspection put into effect after 9/11. No problems of course, actually kind of interesting since it is something we hadn't ever had to do. After that it was clear sailing to Cottonwood. Lots of snow the closer we got to Flagstaff. So pretty to look at, just glad the roads were all clear!

Dave and I are back in Las Vegas for Christmas. We arrived on the 15th and have had a nice stay so far…well most of the stay has been nice...I ended up with a flu bug that was not nice but I’m much better now. Our weather has turned a bit not-nice too; cold and windy the last couple days, but at least the wind is supposed to calm down tomorrow.

On the nice side we made it down to the new City Center complex, quite the place from the outside. It just opened, as a matter of fact we were there the day before they were allowing the public inside. We’ve also been out to some yummy meals, to Camping World in Henderson and over to Sam’s Town. Christmas Eve will include dinner out and a show so that will be fun. Hopefully we will make it downtown and back to City Center before we leave.
